Bony Knees

Somewhere down on Fullerton since 2025

So you're curious about contributing to Bony Knees? You've come to the right place!

What is contributing?

"Contributing" is the process of submitting your content to be published by a media publication. Contributing articles, photos and other creative work to a publication makes you a Contributor!

Contributing is a way for a publication to give a platform to voices from their community, as well as ensure they are publishing content that is timely and relevant to their audience.

What kind of things can I contribute?

Right now, we primarily accept contributions in the form of pitches for written articles. Want to contribute something else? Reach out and we'll see if we can find a place for your work!

In terms of articles, we are currently looking for interviews, reviews, op-eds, essays, deep-dives, news pieces and any other form of written content that has emo, punk or indie music at its heart. Articles can be part of existing series we have published, or be something entirely new!

Also, we aren't the genre police. The boundaries between music scenes are more fluid than ever, and we'd be happy to talk over any idea you have that connects to our mission to foster community and DIY culture in music!

What should I include in my pitch?

Your emailed pitch should include the title of your pitch in the subject line, a brief description of your idea, how you plan to follow-through on the pitch (including what support you may need from us), a bit about you, and any samples of your work that you're proud of!

Will you modify my work?

We edit any textual content that appears on the website to fit the style and level of quality we want to present. That being said, we try hard to preserve the artistic voice of our Contributors. If you disagree with any of our edits, we are happy to discuss the reasoning and find a solution that satisfies you!

Do you own my contributed work?

No! You retain all of the copyright to your contributed work. We only act as the publisher of your work.

Can I publish my work elsewhere?

Generally, we want to be the exclusive publisher of your work. But if you have a reason we should be flexible on this, we're happy to hear it!

Do I need to have prior experience to contribute?

We don't need you to have any formal qualifications or prior experience to contribute, but we do take the quality of our published work seriously. High-quality work is often ready-to-publish work.

With articles we want you to bring your best spelling, punctuation and grammar game. Make your high-school English teacher proud!

Do you pay for contributions?

Ah, the big question!

For articles, we currently offer $10 for smaller pieces (~250 words) and $20 for medium pieces (~500 words). Anything longer will require some extra discussion, and the $-per-word may not scale linearly.

We know these rates are low compared to larger publications, but we're still just a small zine with no regular source of funding or income. We want to be able to compensate our Contributors to some degree, but we ask that you understand the amount we are able to pay is currently quite limited.

I'm ready! How can I start contributing?

We're excited to hear from you! Please reach out to us at [email protected] and we'll get back to you as soon as we can!
